Huddleston reached the milestone in early December against West Plains in a tournament in Brock.
“Before the game, I was like five or six points away and I got it in the first quarter,” Huddleston said when asked if he knew how close he was to the milestone prior to the game, adding, “I got it on a wing three on the right side.”
The senior guard said reaching 1,000 career points meant a lot to him and he was surprised by Tuesday night’s gesture of being presented with the basketball.
“It was a surprise,” he said. “They were calling it out and I didn’t realize it until the parents started talking. I was really surprised.”
Central Heights athletic director and head basketball coach Kevin Herron planned to honor his senior guard with the ball sooner but Huddleston was injured for about four weeks.
“Man, it’s awesome,” Herron said of Huddleston’s success. “People don’t realize the time that he has put in to be who he is as a player. He’s not a selfish player. He moves the ball around so to be able to do that is even a neater deal because he did it by running the point guard a lot and sharing the ball a lot. It’s not like he was expecting to shoot every time. He earned it.”
Huddleston is back from the injury and said, “I’m feeling good, a lot better now.”
The Blue Devils currently hold an overall record of 15-11 and a district record of 5-1. Huddleston has high expectations for the remainder of the season.
“To win district and make it to the regional tournament if not further,” he said.
As he leads his team for the rest of his senior season, Huddleston will continue to add to his impressive resume.
