Woden cross country runner Angel Torres and Central Heights competitor Hadley Watts both qualified as the top competitor from their respective Region III Meets for Saturday’s University Interscholastic League State Cross Country Meet in Round Rock.

Torres, a senior who competed in the Class 2A boys, and Watts, a junior who ran against the state’s best in the Class 3A girls competition, both rose to the challenge at Old Settlers Park by finishing fifth in their respective race on Saturday to lead 34 runners from the Nacogdoches area who qualified.

Torres, who ran at state the past two years, posted a time of 16:23.53, finishing as the No. 5 runner and about 19 seconds off the pace of Diego Flores of San Antonio Great Hearts Monte Vista, who posted a winning time of 16:04.76.

Watts also gave a strong effort, posting a time of 11:53.00, which was approximately 25 seconds behind Class 3A girls champion Peyton Muntz of Whitesboro.

In Class 2A boys, Woden placed 10th overall, while Tenaha was 14th and Martinsville 15th.

Douglass junior Walker Reeves finished 41st with a time of 17:21.24 and Tenaha junior Oscar Flores was also in the top 50, sitting at 46th with a 17:24.64.

In the Class 2A girls race, Douglass sophomore Madyson Freeman posted the 63rd finish with a time of 13:22.51. Other finishers in the classification included: 65th, Jaiyah Hodge, senior, Garrison, 13:23.86; 76th, Charlisa Teague, soph., San Augustine, 13:31.73; 79th, Emily Drewery, senior, Woden, 13:33.64; 94th, Laura Taylor, junior, Woden, 13:46.46; 117th, Briley Watkins, junior, Woden, 14:15.76; 137th, Kaeli Bentley, junior, Woden, 15:02.22; 138th, Morgan Hoya, senior, Woden, 15:10.61; 146th, Tessa Bentley, junior, Woden, 15:37.58; 149th, Abigail Williams, soph., Woden, 15:56.94.

As a team, Woden finished in 15th place.

In Class 4A boys, Center senior Jacob Garcia placed 22nd with a time of 16:06.24.
